May is one of the best months — about 19°C/8°C, comfortable for cobblestone walking, with the castle, Baroque Theatre, and Vltava rafting all in full swing. Greenery along the river peaks and the town looks its lushest. The catch is that crowds and prices climb sharply as the high season opens; midday day-tripper buses from Prague fill the narrow lanes from late morning to mid-afternoon. The fix is the standard one here: stay overnight and walk the Old Town at dawn or after dusk when the crowds clear. Rainfall rises notably (around 75mm) versus the dry winter, so pack a rain layer even on sunny forecasts. Riverside terraces and beer gardens are open, and rafting from Vyšší Brod down toward town is a highlight once the river warms. May balances good weather, fully open sights, and slightly-less-than-peak crowds — a strong choice if you book accommodation early.

June brings the town's biggest event — the Five-Petalled Rose Festival (Slavnosti pětilisté růže), usually the third weekend, when the streets fill with Renaissance costumes, fencing, music, processions, and fireworks. It is spectacular but packs the tiny center, so book accommodation months ahead. Weather is warm at about 22°C/11°C, with the long daylight making dawn and dusk strolls especially rewarding. Rainfall is high (around 95mm) — Central European summers are showery — so carry rain gear. This is peak season: day-trippers crowd the lanes midday, prices are high, and rafting on the Vltava is at its busiest and most enjoyable. The recurring advice applies strongly — overnight stays let you enjoy the Castle Bridge and Old Town crowd-free early and late. June is gorgeous and lively but expensive and crowded, especially around the Rose Festival. Lovely if you plan ahead and avoid midday in the narrowest streets.

September is widely considered the best month to visit — about 19°C/9°C, comfortable for walking, with summer crowds thinning after the school holidays and prices softening to shoulder-season levels. All the main sights are still open — the castle interiors and Baroque Theatre run through October, the Egon Schiele Art Centrum year-round, and Vltava rafting continues. Early-autumn colour starts to tint the hillsides above the Vltava bend, the scene many photographers prize most. Midday weekends can still draw day-trippers, but weekdays feel noticeably calmer than July-August. Rainfall drops to around 65mm, and the light is softer and warmer — excellent for photography. September hits the rare combination of open sights, good weather, thinning crowds, and easing prices. For most travelers it is the smartest time to come, especially mid-to-late month on weekdays.
