July is peak summer — the warmest, busiest month, with days around 24°C/13°C, long sunshine, and the full slate of attractions open. It's the easiest month for the lake and the Dachstein, and the village is at its liveliest. The caves and high platforms are cold even now, so bring a warm layer. Prices peak and rooms sell out months ahead. It's a fine month weather-wise for the lake and mountains, and the most reliable for finding all attractions running. The Assumption Day holiday (Aug 15) is especially packed. Stay overnight or arrive early, and time the village for the quiet morning and evening hours while saving midday for the Dachstein or the lake. Alpine afternoon thunderstorms remain common, so keep flexible plans and carry a waterproof; the Dachstein heights and ice caves are cold year-round. Humidity ticks up a little, and lake fog can linger on calm mornings. Prices stay at their highest and rooms remain scarce — book well ahead. May is one of the best months in Hallstatt — mild, green, and with almost everything running, days averaging about 18°C/8°C. The valley is lush, the lake is bright, and the lake boats and Dachstein cable car are in full swing. It's a sweet spot of warm-enough weather and slightly thinner crowds than the July-August peak, especially mid-month and away from the long Labour Day weekend. Mornings and evenings are genuinely lovely and quiet. The catch is rain: May is one of the wetter months in this alpine-lake climate, with frequent afternoon showers and the occasional foggy day, so pack a waterproof and keep itineraries flexible — slot the Dachstein for the clearest day. The Corpus Christi boat procession on the lake (late May or early June, depending on the calendar) is a centuries-old tradition worth catching. Day-tripper numbers and prices are climbing toward summer levels, so book accommodation ahead. The Salzwelten salt mine remains closed for reconstruction (until ~30 June 2026).
