May is arguably the best month to visit Kotor — warm, sunny, and lively without the July-August crush. It averages 23°C/14°C with long days and easing rain. The town is in full swing: all-day sightseeing in summer clothes, boat trips to Perast running near-full schedules, and Lovćen and Budva day trips easy. By late May the bay warms toward swimmable (~19-20°C), so beach time becomes an option alongside the Old Town and the walls climb. Cruise traffic is building but hasn't peaked. Crowds and prices are higher than April but still well below the summer peak — you'll want to book popular konobas and boat tours ahead, but the Old Town doesn't feel overrun. The walls climb is glorious in the milder air. Pack light summer clothing, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a packable rain layer (the bay still sees showers). For the best balance of weather, swimmable sea, and manageable crowds, May is hard to beat.

June in Kotor is early summer at its best — hot, swimmable, and lively, but a notch quieter and cheaper than July-August. It averages 27°C/18°C with long sunshine and easing rain. The bay reaches a comfortable ~22°C, so swims, boat trips, and Perast outings are all in play alongside the Old Town and the walls climb. Boat schedules run full, opening up the bay and Lovćen tours. Days are long, with sunsets near 20:30 — lovely from the fortress. Crowds and prices climb toward peak, and cruise ships are frequent, so book accommodation, boat tours, and popular konobas in advance — but the town still breathes compared with August. Early June is calmer than late June. The enclosed bay starts to feel humid in the heat. Pack light summer clothing, swimwear, a hat, and strong sunscreen — the midday sun is intense (UV 9) and the walls climb is punishing at noon. For warm sea, full access, and crowds that haven't yet peaked, June is an excellent choice.

September is many regulars' favorite month in Kotor — warm bay, easing crowds, and lower prices than the summer peak. It averages 26°C/17°C with pleasant, mostly sunny days, though the bay's autumn rain begins to return. The water holds its summer warmth (~23-24°C), so swimming and boat trips continue, but the August intensity drains away: the alleys breathe, cruise traffic eases, boat tours are easier to book, and prices drop. Early September still feels like summer; by late September there's a gentle autumn edge and more showers. It's an ideal blend of beach-and-bay weather and uncrowded sightseeing — the Old Town and the walls climb are a pleasure without the midday cruise mob. Rainfall ticks up versus mid-summer, so pack a light layer and a packable rain shell alongside your summer kit. For warm-bay days without the August crush, September is the smart pick.
