July is high summer and Lucerne's busiest month — warm days around 25°C/14°C (sometimes hotter), brilliant long evenings, and every mountain, boat, and terrace in full swing. The lake is at its best for swimming, and the lakefront buzzes. This is peak everything: tour buses, cruise-excursion crowds, and the year's highest prices, so book hotels and mountain tickets well ahead. The lakeside Blue Balls Festival brings live music to the waterfront in mid-July. Afternoon thunderstorms still build over the mountains and can briefly close a cable car — morning ascents give the clearest summit views. Even in this heat, mountain tops like Titlis (3,020m) stay cold and snowy, so carry a warm layer. Pack light summer clothes, strong sun protection (alpine sun is fierce), a warm summit layer, and a rain shell. Expect crowds at the Chapel Bridge and the boat piers — go early.

August stays warm (around 24°C/14°C) and busy, with two big draws: Swiss National Day on August 1 brings fireworks over Lake Lucerne, and the prestigious Lucerne Festival of classical music opens in mid-August at the KKL concert hall, drawing music lovers worldwide. It remains peak season — all mountains and cruises running, excellent lake swimming, and lively long evenings, but also peak crowds and prices, so reserve ahead. The Chapel Bridge and boat piers are at their most crowded. Weather is much like July: warm and pleasant with the chance of afternoon thunderstorms over the mountains, so favour morning ascents and watch the summit webcams. The peaks stay cold even now — carry a warm layer for Titlis or Pilatus. Late August begins the slow tilt toward autumn, with very slightly cooler evenings — a hint of the quieter, clearer shoulder season ahead.

September is one of the best months to visit Lucerne — warm, settled days around 20°C/11°C, clearer and crisper air than midsummer, and the year's most reliable mountain views as the humidity drops. Crowds and prices ease back from the August peak. All mountains are still running (the Pilatus cogwheel typically operates until around mid-October), the Lucerne Festival continues into early September, and the lake is still pleasant. Late in the month, the first autumn colour appears on the slopes. The wider day-night swing means cooler evenings, so pack layers, but rainfall eases compared with summer. This is a connoisseur's month: great light for photography, fewer tour crowds, and full access to the mountains and cruises. Note: it's still a popular month, so central hotels stay fairly priced rather than cheap — book the best-located places ahead.
