Amman in 5 Days — City, Jerash, Dead Sea + Petra Overnight

The capital and its day trips, then south to Petra for the headline experience

Five days lets you do Amman properly and add Petra as an overnight rather than a brutal day trip. Days 1-2 cover the city core, Jerash and the Dead Sea from Amman. Day 3 drives south via Madaba and Mount Nebo to Petra. Day 4 is a full day inside Petra (the Siq, the Treasury, the Monastery climb). Day 5 returns to Amman, optionally with a second short Petra morning. This is the most efficient way to see Jordan's best without rushing Petra. Buy the 2-day Jordan Pass (Explorer, 75 JOD) if you want two days at Petra.

Five days hits the sweet spot for Amman — three days for the major districts, plus two days for nearby destinations that show a different side of the country. The pace stays relaxed, you get more variety in your photo album, and the day trips break up the urban intensity nicely.

DAY 1

Amman city core

Citadel - Roman Theatre - downtown - Rainbow Street

Activities

  1. 08:30 Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a) 2h30

The hilltop ruins — Temple of Hercules, Umayyad Palace, Archaeological Museum — with the city view. Go early for cool air and good light.

Cost: Entry 3 JOD (~$4), free with Jordan Pass TIP: Exposed grounds; bring water and a hat. Taxi up, walk down.
  2. 11:30 Roman Theatre + downtown souks 2h30

The 6,000-seat 2nd-century theatre and its small museums, then the downtown souks and old-city bustle.

Cost: Entry 2 JOD (~$3), free with Jordan Pass TIP: Lunch at Hashem nearby. Friday brings midday closures.
  3. 15:30 King Abdullah I Mosque + Rainbow Street 4h

See the blue-domed mosque (open to visitors outside prayer), then spend the evening on Rainbow Street's cafés, shops and restaurants in Jabal Amman.

Cost: Mosque small fee; dinner JOD 14-40 (~$20-55) TIP: Modest dress at the mosque. Sufra or Books@Cafe for the evening.

DAY 2

Jerash + Dead Sea (or split across two half-days)

Roman city north - hypersaline float west

Activities

  1. 08:30 Jerash Roman city 3h30

Drive 1 hour north to Jerash for Hadrian's Arch, the Oval Plaza, the colonnaded Cardo and the Temple of Artemis. One of the best-preserved Roman cities anywhere.

Cost: Entry 10 JOD (~$14), free with Jordan Pass; tour $30-50 TIP: Morning beats the heat and bus crowds. Sun protection essential.
  2. 14:00 Dead Sea float + mud (afternoon) 4h

If you have a driver, swing west to the Dead Sea afterward for a float and mineral-mud session via a resort beach. Otherwise, do the Dead Sea as a separate easy half-day.

Cost: Resort day pass JOD 25-45 (~$35-65) TIP: Doing both in one day means a long day and a lot of driving — splitting them is gentler. Don't shave before the Dead Sea; keep water out of your eyes.

Meal Recommendations

Breakfast

Hotel breakfast

Amman · $5-15

Early start for the drive north.

Lunch

Near Jerash or Dead Sea resort

Jerash / Dead Sea · $11-50

Eat at the resort if you continue west.

Dinner

Jabal al-Weibdeh

Weibdeh · $20-50

A private driver makes combining Jerash and the Dead Sea feasible; by tour, pick one. Public transit between the two is impractical.

DAY 2 Estimated Spend (per person, flights excl.)

Budget $85 Mid $190 Luxury $420
DAY 3

Amman to Petra via Madaba & Mount Nebo

Mosaic map - biblical viewpoint - Desert Highway south

Activities

  1. 08:30 Madaba — the mosaic map 1h30

Heading south, stop in Madaba (about 45 min from Amman) to see the 6th-century Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land on the floor of St George's Church, plus other mosaics around town.

Cost: Church entry ~JOD 1-2 TIP: Small and quick — easy to combine with Mount Nebo just up the road.
  2. 10:30 Mount Nebo viewpoint 1h30

The hilltop where, by tradition, Moses viewed the Promised Land. On a clear day you can see the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and even Jerusalem in the distance, plus a memorial church with ancient mosaics.

Cost: Entry ~JOD 3 TIP: Haze often limits the view — mornings tend to be clearer. Combine with Madaba as one stop.
  3. 13:00 Drive south to Petra (Wadi Musa) 3h

Continue down the Desert Highway (or the slower scenic King's Highway) to Wadi Musa, the town at Petra's gate. Check in and rest before tomorrow's full day.

Cost: Rental car/driver; fuel TIP: The King's Highway is far more scenic (Wadi Mujib gorge, Kerak Castle) but adds 1-2 hours — choose based on time.
  4. 19:00 Petra by Night (if running) 2h

On certain evenings, the Siq and Treasury are lit by candlelight for the Petra by Night show. Worth checking the schedule for your dates.

Cost: Separate ticket ~JOD 17 (not covered by Jordan Pass) TIP: Runs only on select nights and is a separate paid ticket. Confirm it's operating before counting on it.

Meal Recommendations

Breakfast

Hotel breakfast

Amman · $5-15

Eat before the southbound drive.

Lunch

Madaba restaurant

Madaba · $8-20

Mezze and grills in town before continuing south.

Dinner

Wadi Musa restaurant

Petra (Wadi Musa) · $15-35

Try a Bedouin zarb (pit-cooked) dinner near Petra.

Transit:

Rent a car or hire a driver for the southbound trip — it's the only practical way to fit in Madaba and Mount Nebo en route. The JETT bus runs Amman-Petra directly but skips the stops.

DAY 3 Estimated Spend (per person, flights excl.)

Budget $90 Mid $210 Luxury $480
DAY 4

Petra — a full day in the rose-red city

The Siq - the Treasury - Royal Tombs - the Monastery climb

Activities

  1. 06:30 Early entry through the Siq 2h

Enter at opening to walk the Siq — a 1.2 km narrow gorge — to the moment it frames the Treasury (Al-Khazneh). Early light is best and crowds are thinnest.

Cost: Petra entry 50 JOD (~$70) for overnight visitors, covered by Jordan Pass TIP: The Jordan Pass pays for itself here. Children under 12 enter free. Go early to beat heat and crowds.
  2. 08:30 Street of Facades, Royal Tombs, Colonnaded Street 3h30

Continue past the Treasury into the wider valley — the Theatre, the Royal Tombs, the Colonnaded Street and the Great Temple. Petra is vast; it's a full day of walking.

Cost: Included with entry TIP: Decline the donkey/camel touts unless you genuinely want a ride. Carry far more water than seems necessary.
  3. 12:30 Lunch inside the park 1h

Eat at the Basin Restaurant or a smaller café deep in the site to refuel before the big climb.

Cost: JOD 15-30 (~$20-42) TIP: Limited options inside; prices are higher than town. Bring snacks as backup.
  4. 13:30 The Monastery (Ad-Deir) climb 3h

Climb roughly 800 rock-cut steps to the Monastery, Petra's largest monument and, for many, more impressive than the Treasury. It's a demanding 45-60 minute ascent.

Cost: Included with entry TIP: Save it for afternoon shade on the climb. Take it slow in heat. The walk back out to the gate is long — pace your energy.

Meal Recommendations

Breakfast

Hotel in Wadi Musa

Lunch

Basin Restaurant (inside Petra)

Petra · $20-42

One of the few sit-down options deep in the park.

Transit:

Petra is explored entirely on foot (with optional horse/donkey/camel rides). Expect 12-18 km of walking and a lot of elevation. Wear broken-in shoes.

DAY 4 Estimated Spend (per person, flights excl.)

Budget $95 Mid $220 Luxury $500
DAY 5

Petra morning + return to Amman

Second Petra glimpse - Desert Highway north - final Amman evening

Activities

  1. 07:00 Optional second Petra morning 2h30

With a 2-day Petra ticket, return for a quieter morning to revisit the Treasury in fresh light or reach a viewpoint (the High Place of Sacrifice or the Treasury overlook) you missed.

Cost: Covered by 2-day Jordan Pass (Explorer) TIP: If you only bought a 1-day pass, skip this and start north earlier instead.
  2. 10:30 Drive north to Amman 3h

Take the Desert Highway back to Amman (about 3 hours). If you'd rather not double back, this is the point at which a longer itinerary would head further south to Wadi Rum instead.

Cost: Rental car/driver; or JETT bus ~JOD 11-12 TIP: The JETT bus is comfortable and cheap if you don't have a car.
  3. 15:30 Final Amman evening 4h

Back in the capital, use the afternoon for anything you missed — the Royal Automobile Museum, more of Jabal al-Weibdeh, or last-minute souvenir shopping downtown — and a farewell dinner.

Cost: Dinner JOD 14-50 (~$20-70) TIP: Fakhreldin or Romero for a polished last meal; Rainbow Street for a relaxed one.

Meal Recommendations

Breakfast

Amman 5-Day Itinerary FAQ

Is 5 days enough to see Petra and Amman?
Yes — five days is a comfortable Jordan highlights loop: Amman's city core, Jerash, the Dead Sea, and a proper overnight at Petra with a full day inside. It's far better than trying to day-trip Petra from Amman. If you also want Wadi Rum's desert and a night under the stars, stretch to 7 days.
Should I drive the Desert Highway or the King's Highway to Petra?
The Desert Highway is faster (about 3 hours) and the practical default. The King's Highway is slower (4-5 hours) but far more scenic, passing the dramatic Wadi Mujib gorge and Kerak Castle. If you have the time and a car, take the King's Highway one way and the Desert Highway back.
How long should I spend inside Petra?
A full day at minimum — the Siq, Treasury, Royal Tombs, and especially the Monastery climb fill 7-9 hours and 12-18 km of walking. Two days (with a 2-day Jordan Pass) let you add the High Place of Sacrifice trail and revisit the Treasury in different light without exhausting yourself. One rushed day misses a lot.
