April in Kyoto is the most magnetic, most expensive, and most crowded month of the year. Cherry blossoms in full bloom (first week), Heian Jingu night illumination, Daigo-ji Sakura Matsuri (second Sunday), and Golden Week kick-off (late April) — every major attraction is compressed into 30 days. Temperatures of 19°C/9°C are optimal for all-day outdoor activity. The Philosopher's Path along the canal stretches roughly 2 km in an unbroken cherry blossom tunnel — free, walkable any time, and Kyoto's iconic April photograph. Maruyama Park's shidare-zakura (a weeping cherry tree that has stood since 1592, in its 9th generation) is best during the sunset-to-9 PM illumination window. Daigo-ji is where Toyotomi Hideyoshi held his famous 1598 cherry blossom viewing — the second-Sunday re-enactment draws crowds from across Japan. First week of April (peak bloom) pushes business hotels to ¥18,000-25,000 ($120-165) and ryokan with kaiseki dinner to ¥60,000-120,000 ($400-800). Just before Golden Week (late April), hotels effectively sell out. Round-trip flights from major Asian and North American cities hit $700-1,100. Late April through early May (Golden Week) is the year's absolute peak. The smart middle ground is the second or third week of April — cherry blossoms are easing, Golden Week hasn't started, and pricing is more reasonable.

November is foliage peak — pairs with April cherry blossom as Kyoto's most popular month. 17°C/7°C is comparable to Korean or American Northeast autumn. Rainfall of 75 mm is one of the year's lowest, with frequent clear days perfect for photography. The five top viewing spots: Tofuku-ji (東福寺) Tsuten-kyo bridge with its valley-of-foliage view from above, Eikan-do (永観堂, Kyoto's #1 foliage temple), Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) main hall with foliage night views below, Arashiyama (Hogon-ji, Tenryu-ji, Togetsukyo Bridge), and Toji Pagoda (東寺) with pond reflection shots. Night illuminations ($5.30-8 / ¥800-1,200) are the season's signature — best from sunset to 9 PM. The downsides are price and crowds. The third and fourth weeks of November hit yearly hotel highs — business hotels at $120-165 / ¥18,000-25,000, ryokan at $535-1,000+ / ¥80,000-150,000. Round-trip flights also peak. Temple entry waits of 1 hour are normal. Weekday mornings and early evening illuminations (until 7 PM) are noticeably less crowded. The first week of November still sees foliage starting but at lower prices — a smart-value window.

March in Kyoto is the dramatic crossover from winter to spring. Early March stays chilly but temperatures climb quickly, with cherry blossoms opening by late month. Kyoto's average opening date is March 25-28 (1-2 days behind Tokyo and Osaka), with full bloom about a week later — meaning the first week of April is Kyoto's cherry blossom peak. The early-to-mid March Higashiyama Hanatouro (東山花灯路) lantern festival is the season's underrated gem — a 4.6 km route from Kiyomizu-dera through Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park, and Gion lined with hand-lit lanterns after sunset. Free to walk, no overwhelming crowds. Late March turns the city into a cherry blossom mob scene. Maruyama Park's shidare-zakura (weeping cherry) night illumination, the Philosopher's Path along the canal, and Daigo-ji's Sakura Matsuri (re-enacting Toyotomi Hideyoshi's 1598 cherry blossom viewing, second Sunday of April) are the classic stops. Weekday mornings or evening illuminations (6-9 PM) are the only ways to escape the crowds. Accommodation prices spike sharply. Late-March business hotels jump from ¥7,000 ($47) to ¥15,000-22,000 ($100-145). Ryokan hit yearly peak pricing. Book 6 months ahead. Early-to-mid March still offers off-season pricing — pair plum blossoms, the lantern festival, and the Hanatouro for a smart-value trip.
