Split Weather

May is arguably the best month to visit Split — warm, sunny, and lively without the July-August crush. It averages 23°C/14°C with long days and little rain. The city is in full swing: all-day sightseeing in summer clothes, ferries running near-full schedules, and the islands (Hvar, Brač, Vis) easy to reach. By late May the Adriatic warms toward swimmable (~19-20°C), so beach time becomes a real option alongside the palace, Marjan, and Krka. Crowds and prices are higher than April but still well below peak — you'll want to book popular konobas and catamarans ahead, but the city doesn't feel overrun. Sunsets from Marjan Hill are glorious this month. Pack light summer clothing, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, with a light layer for the evening. For the best balance of weather, swimmable sea, and manageable crowds, May is hard to beat.

June in Split is early summer at its best — hot, dry, and swimmable, but a notch quieter and cheaper than July-August. It averages 27°C/18°C with long sunshine and little rain. The sea reaches a comfortable ~22°C, so beach days, island-hopping, and swimming under Marjan are all in play, alongside the palace and Krka. Ferries run their full summer schedules, opening up Hvar, Brač, Vis, and the Blue Cave tours. Days are long, with sunsets near 20:30 perfect for Marjan Hill. Crowds and prices climb toward peak, so book accommodation, catamarans, and popular konobas in advance — but the city still breathes compared with August. Early June is calmer than late June. Pack light summer clothing, swimwear, reef shoes, a hat, and strong sunscreen — the midday sun is intense (UV 9). For warm sea, full island access, and crowds that haven't yet peaked, June is an excellent choice.

September is many regulars' favorite month in Split — warm sea, easing crowds, and lower prices than the summer peak. It averages 26°C/18°C with pleasant, mostly sunny days. The Adriatic holds its summer warmth (~23-24°C), so swimming and island-hopping continue, but the August intensity drains away: the alleys breathe, beaches are calmer, catamarans are easier to book, and prices drop noticeably. Early September still feels like summer; by late September there's a gentle autumn edge to the evenings. Ferry schedules stay near-full early in the month, so Hvar, Brač, Vis, and Krka are all easy. It's an ideal blend of beach weather and uncrowded sightseeing — the palace and Marjan are a pleasure without the cruise mob. Rainfall ticks up a little versus mid-summer, so pack a light layer and a small umbrella alongside your summer kit. For warm-sea beach days without the August crush, September is the smart pick.
