February is typically the hottest and driest month, and one of the most reliable for sun and sea. Highs around 33°C, very warm water, and minimal rain make it prime beach and snorkeling weather. Mnemba Atoll snorkeling visibility is at its best with calm seas. The north beaches swim well through the tides; the east coast is for kitesurfing and tidal-flat walks. Stone Town's Sauti za Busara, a major Swahili and East African music festival, usually falls this month (check dates). It's high season, so prices stay up and the headline restaurants and Stone Town hotels need booking ahead. The flip side of the dry heat is humidity — it can feel sticky, especially late in the month as the long rains approach. Note: high heat and extreme UV (index 12) make sun protection and hydration essential, and malaria precautions still apply. Plan Stone Town for the cooler ends of the day.

June opens the long dry season — for many the best time to visit. The rains have cleared, humidity drops, steady sea breezes set in, and conditions turn reliably sunny and comfortable at around 30°C. Hotels and restaurants are fully open again, the sea settles for snorkeling and dhow trips, and both coasts are at their best — the swimmable north and the breezy, kite-friendly east. Stone Town walking is pleasant in the lower humidity. Prices sit in shoulder territory before the July-August peak, making June a sweet spot of good weather and decent value. It's also a strong month to pair Zanzibar with a mainland safari, which is entering its prime dry season. Note: it's drier, so mosquito numbers fall, but keep up basic malaria precautions. UV stays strong year-round — maintain sun protection.

July is peak season — dry, sunny, comfortable, and the busiest, most expensive time alongside August. Highs around 29°C with sea breezes make it the coolest, most pleasant stretch of the year. Conditions are excellent across the island: the north swims well, the east coast hits prime kitesurfing winds, and Mnemba snorkeling is reliable. Stone Town is comfortable for walking. This is also the prime mainland safari season, so the Zanzibar-plus-safari combo peaks now. The trade-off is crowds and price — book Stone Town hotels, north-coast resorts, and headline restaurants well ahead. The popular sunset rooftops fill, so reserve. Note: it's dry, so mosquito numbers are lower, but keep up basic malaria precautions. The winds that make it pleasant can be strong on exposed east-coast beaches.
