Athens is Western civilization's birthplace — 3,400 years of continuous habitation, the Acropolis (5th century BCE Parthenon), and the cradle of democracy. Cheaper than other major European capitals + gateway to Greek islands (Santorini, Mykonos via ferry). Underrated food scene + bustling neighborhoods + warm Mediterranean culture.

The Acropolis is the canonical Athens experience — the rocky citadel topped by the Parthenon (5th century BCE temple to Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom). UNESCO listed. The complex includes Parthenon, Erechtheion (with the iconic Caryatids — six female statues used as columns), Temple of Athena Nike, and Theatre of Dionysus on the south slope. Pre-booked entry $25 (mandatory in summer). Standard queue can hit 2 hours in summer.

The Acropolis Museum (modern museum below Acropolis, opened 2009) is the must-pair visit. $15 entry. Shows the Parthenon Marbles (replicas + the originals Britain controversially holds at the British Museum), plus Acropolis-area artifacts. The 3rd floor mirrors the Parthenon exactly with the actual frieze + pediment fragments mounted on glass walls.

Ancient Agora was the heart of ancient Athenian democracy — the public square where Socrates taught + Pericles spoke. The Temple of Hephaestus (5th century BCE) is the best-preserved ancient Greek temple in the world. Combined ticket with Acropolis $30 (saves $7 vs separate entries).

National Archaeological Museum has Greece's antiquities — Mycenaean Mask of Agamemnon (1500 BCE), Antikythera Mechanism (2nd century BCE 'world's first computer'), Aphrodite of Knidos. $14 entry. Plan 3-4 hours.

Lycabettus Hill (277m) is Athens' tallest hill — best Athens panorama. Funicular $7 round trip from Kolonaki side. Sunset viewpoint with Acropolis + city + sea visible. Open-air theater on summit (summer concerts).

For real Athens food, leave Plaka. Karamanlidika tou Fani (Monastiraki) is the iconic delicatessen ($15-25/person). O Thanasis (Monastiraki) is the famous souvlaki spot ($5-10). Mikla rooftop in Beyoğlu — wait, that's Istanbul. In Athens: Mikla → Ergon Agora rooftop ($35-50). A few practical realities. Athens is hot in summer — June-August regularly 30-35°C / 86-95°F with no humidity. Pollution improved dramatically since 1990s but still visible. Tipping appreciated 5-10% restaurants but not mandatory.
