Komodo Weather

May is one of the best months to visit Komodo. The dry season is well established — sunny skies, very little rain (around 45mm), calm seas and excellent underwater visibility. It's hot at about 32°C/24°C with strong sun, but conditions on and under the water are close to ideal. Boat schedules are fully reliable, the Padar sunrise is a near-certainty on clear mornings, and diving and snorkelling are at their best. Crowds and prices remain in the manageable shoulder range before the July-August surge. The islands are dry and brown now, which is their natural dry-season look. With minimal rain risk, you can plan island days with confidence. As always in the dry season, the challenge is heat and sun rather than weather disruption — pack serious sun protection and plenty of water, as shade is scarce on the trek to Padar and on the dragon islands.

June brings peak dry-season conditions — hot, very sunny, and almost rain-free (around 25mm), with dry southeast trade winds keeping things a touch fresher than the wet months. Highs are about 31°C with cooler, breezier nights. Conditions are excellent: calm-to-moderate seas, superb underwater visibility, and reliable boats. The Padar sunrise is dependable. This is firmly high season, so crowds and prices are rising and the better liveaboards book out — reserve ahead. The trade winds can pick up some chop on exposed crossings, but nothing like the wet-season swell. Diving is at its best, with strong visibility across Komodo's signature sites. Manage the heat and sun, book early for boats and hotels, and June rewards you with some of the most reliable conditions of the year just before the absolute July-August peak.

July is the busiest month in Komodo and right at the dry-season peak — hot, sunny, and barely any rain (around 15mm). Strong southeast trade winds keep the air drier and nights breezier, though they can stir up chop on exposed crossings. Conditions are about as reliable as Komodo gets: dependable boats, clear Padar sunrises, and excellent diving visibility. The flip side is crowds and cost — this is the most expensive, most booked-out month, so reserve liveaboards, hotels and flights months ahead. Popular sites like Padar and Pink Beach see the most visitors now, so early starts help you beat both the crowds and the midday heat. The daily visitor cap on the park can also make permits tighter in peak season — book through your operator early. If you want guaranteed dry-season conditions and don't mind sharing the islands, July delivers — just plan and book well in advance.
