Vientiane

Vientiane is Southeast Asia's quietest national capital — population 820,000 on the banks of the Mekong River bordering Thailand (the river separates Laos from Thailand here, Nong Khai Thailand visible across via Friendship Bridge). Capital since 1563 when King Setthathirath moved Lan Xang kingdom from Luang Prabang.

French colonial heritage (1893-1953 French protectorate) survives in tree-lined boulevards + croissant cafés + Patuxai (Laotian Arc de Triomphe, 1957-1968 built with American cement intended for an airport — locals joke 'it's the runway pointing up'). Pha That Luang (the great gold-plated stupa, Laos's most important national monument + symbol on currency, 16th-century rebuilt 1934 after Thai invasion). Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan, surreal 1958 Hindu-Buddhist sculpture park 25km south + giant reclining Buddha + 3-story pumpkin entrance you climb through to symbolize hell-earth-heaven).

Wat Si Saket (1818, oldest surviving temple in Vientiane after Thai destruction 1828, contains 10,000 Buddha statues in cloister walls). Mekong River sunset is Vientiane's iconic moment — sun sets over Thailand creating golden-hour magic. COPE Center (sobering exhibition on cluster bombs from Vietnam War — Laos was the most bombed country per capita in history, US dropped more bombs on Laos 1964-1973 than all of WWII).

Cheaper + slower than Luang Prabang. Most travelers visit briefly between Luang Prabang + Bangkok. Vang Vieng (3.5h north) is the karst-tubing party town extension.

Iconic Lao cuisine: Larb (minced meat salad with mint + lime + chili, $3-6 — Lao national dish), Tam mak hoong (papaya salad, $2-4), Khao soi Lao (rice noodle soup with pork sauce, $2-5 — different from Thai khao soi), Sticky rice (eaten with everything, $1 per serving), Sin haeng (Lao sausage, $3-6), Beerlao ($1-2 — Lao national pride beer), Lao-Lao rice whisky ($1-3 — strong + cheap).

Bottom line: Vientiane is canonical Lao slow travel + cheap budget Asia + French colonial + Mekong sunset + Vang Vieng gateway. 1-2 days enough; combine Luang Prabang + Vang Vieng for full Laos trip.
