Yangon

Yangon (formerly Rangoon) is Myanmar's largest city + former capital — population 5.4M, the country's commercial + cultural center despite the political capital moving to Naypyidaw in 2005. Shwedagon Pagoda is THE icon — 99m gold-plated stupa containing 8 hairs of the Buddha (the holiest Buddhist site in Myanmar; legend says built 2,600 years ago, archaeology says 6th century AD). The British colonial heart (1885-1948) survives in Downtown Yangon — wide boulevards + colonnaded Sule Pagoda + the most concentrated colonial-era architecture in Southeast Asia (rivals Singapore's pre-independence period). Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market) is the largest traditional market with rubies + jade + Burmese textiles + lacquerware.

Day trips: Bago (1h east, ancient Mon kingdom + Shwemawdaw Pagoda 114m + Reclining Buddha 55m), Twante (river crossing + traditional pottery making), Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (5h, Golden Rock balanced precariously on cliff edge with Buddha hair). Cheap (one of cheapest tourist cities globally), culturally rich, but be aware of political situation since 2021 military coup — check current safety advisories before traveling.
