Santorini is the most iconic Greek island — population 15,000 in summer (locals 4,000), an active volcanic caldera in the Aegean Sea formed by the catastrophic 1600 BC Minoan eruption that may have inspired Plato's Atlantis myth. The island is technically a sunken volcano whose rim forms a 10km-wide caldera with the still-active Nea Kameni volcano in the center (last erupted 1950).
